Track Tire & Temperature Advisory
Estimate track temperatures and get compound selection advice based on ambient weather.
We will estimate track surface temperature mathematically using ambient heat and cloud cover data.
High track surface temp. Medium/Soft compounds will grease up quickly under race pace.
Drop cold starting pressures. Tire temps will climb exceptionally fast on first lap.
How Track Temp Works
Black asphalt acts as a massive thermal battery. On a sunny 80°F day, the track surface will easily reach 125°F or higher.
If tracking in the afternoon: Expect ambient temps to be identical to the morning, but track temps to be significantly hotter due to prolonged UV exposure.
Tire Safety Questions
Will slicks work if the track is below 60 degrees?
Generally, no, unless specifically formulated for cold endurance. A standard slick will stay frozen, provide zero mechanical grip, and often suffer from 'cold tearing' where chunks of rubber rip off instead of melting smoothly.
Why should I drop starting pressures on a hot day?
The ambient air inside the tire expands faster with internal heat. If the track is acting like a frying pan, your 25 PSI cold tire might jump to 38 PSI hot entirely by the end of lap 1, ruining grip for the entire 20 minute session. Start lower to hit your 32 PSI target window mid-stint.
