Racing Harness Expiry & Compliance Tracker

Check exactly when your FIA or SFI racing harness expires and see if it's track-legal.

Select your homologation standard and date tag.

FIA tags (silver/orange) display the year of manufacture or expiration year directly. Enter the Manufactured Year here if your tag says "Not Valid After XX", just look at when it expires vs this tool.

Compliance Status
Expiration Date
December 31, 2031
VALID (2117 days left)

Harness is legal and valid for tech inspection under its current homologation.

Re-Webbing Options

FIA Harnesses: CANNOT be legally re-webbed to extend the homologation date. Once an FIA harness expires after 5 years, it must be completely replaced. The hardware cannot receive a new FIA tag.

Summary: Based on the FIA 8853-2016 standard (5-year lifespan), a harness manufactured in 2026 has a strict technical expiration date of December 31, 2031. The harness is currently VALID for another 2117 days for sanctioned motorsport use.

Sanctioning Body Overrides

While this tool provides the factory homologation expiration date, your local sanctioning body (NASA, SCCA, HPDE groups) has the final say.

  • Some HPDE groups allow SFI belts to run out to 5 years (ignoring the 2-year punch).
  • Some wheel-to-wheel race series strictly enforce FIA dates to the exact day.
  • Check your specific supplementary rules before a race weekend.

Expiration Logic

FIA 8853-2016: 5 Years. Expiry is always calculated to December 31st of the 5th year following the year of manufacture.

SFI 16.1 & 16.5: 2 Years. Expiry is calculated exactly to the last day of the month punched on the tag, 2 years later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do FIA harnesses last 5 years but SFI only 2?

The standards bodies use different testing parameters. SFI (predominantly US/drag racing) assumes higher UV degradation and harsher element exposure typical of open-cockpit dragsters, mandating a 2-year cycle for maximum safety margin. FIA testing includes 5-year degradation modeling.

My harness looks brand new but is expired. Is it safe?

Seatbelt webbing (Nylon/Polyester) degrades structurally from UV light (sunlight), heat cycles, and ambient ozone—even if it looks perfect. A 6-year-old harness can lose 20-30% of its tensile strength. For life-saving equipment, do not risk it.

Does it matter if my car lives in a garage?

No. Tech inspectors look exclusively at the printed/punched date tag. They cannot verify how the car was stored, so the rule is hard and fast based on the date alone.
