Static Brake Bias Calculator
Calculate your front-to-rear static brake bias percentage based on rotor diameters, caliper piston sizes, and pad friction.
Standard Track Baselines
Most production-based track cars aim for approximately 60-68% Front Bias depending on weight distribution and aero configuration. Mid-engine or rear-engine cars may tolerate more rear bias (55-60% front).
Brake Bias Tuning
Calculated brake bias is a starting point. Ideal bias depends on:
- Brake pad compound and temperature characteristics
- Suspension geometry and anti-dive
- Driver preference (some prefer front stability over rotation)
- Track surface and tire grip levels
Methodology
Torque Proxy: Piston Area × Effective Rotor Radius × Pad Friction (µ)
Front Bias %: Front Torque Proxy ÷ (Front + Rear Torque Proxy) × 100
Frequently Asked Questions
Is static brake bias the same as dynamic brake bias?
No. Static is calculated from resting weight distribution. Dynamic changes under braking due to weight transfer. This calculator provides static starting point; adjust during brake testing.
Can I adjust brake bias mid-session?
Yes! Many track cars have adjustable bias dials. Start near this calculated value, then adjust for lock-up feel. Front-biased = rear locks first; rear-biased = understeer under braking.
What happens if brake balance is too far forward?
Rear end can lock, causing loss of directional control (spin). If too far rear, front end locks = understeer (heavy steering). Find the balance point where both end together.
