Recommended Track Ranges

Front toe: 0 to 1mm toe-out (turn-in sharpness) · Rear toe: 1-3mm toe-in (stability) · Camber: -1.5° to -3.5° (track day), -0.5° to -1.5° (street)

Alignment Considerations

These conversions assume symmetric geometry. Real-world considerations:

  • Toe plates vs string method vs laser — each has measurement tolerances
  • Camber changes with ride height and load
  • Always set alignment with driver weight in the seat
  • Check alignment after any suspension modification

Methodology

Toe conversion: degrees = (toe_mm ÷ (diameter_mm × π)) × 360

Contact width: effective_width = tire_width × cos(camber)

Edge difference: height_delta = tire_width × sin(|camber|)

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I measure total toe or per-side?

Total toe is the sum of both wheels. Most alignment specs quote total toe. If adjusting one side at a time, divide by 2 to get the per-side value. Always center the steering wheel first, then split toe equally.

What does negative camber do?

Negative camber tilts the top of the tire inward. Under cornering load, the tire's contact patch flattens against the road. Too little camber = outer edge wear in corners. Too much = inner edge wear on straights. Track cars typically run -2° to -3.5° front.

How do I measure toe at home?

Use string lines along the side of the car, measuring from the string to the front and rear of each rim at hub height. The difference between front and rear measurements is your toe per side. Convert to degrees using this calculator.
